The Mountains of Ignorance[]

The Mountains of Ignorance lie to the north of the Kingdom of Wisdom. They are home to the terrifying demons that Milo and company encounter near the end of the story.

Physical description[]

The mountains are extremely treacherous, with jagged peaks and sheer cliffs covered in slimy moss. They are surrounded by an oily mist that casts a deep shadow over the land. A freezing wind blows constantly through the land, and the air smells "thick and heavy, as if it had been used several times before."

In the plot[]

Many years prior to Milo's encounter with the Tollbooth, King Azaz and The Mathemagician banished their two adoptive sisters to the Castle in the Air, suspended from the highest peak. The Demons, unable to enter, could merely wait at the entrance to keep the princesses from escaping. After Milo convinces the brothers to let him rescue Rhyme and Reason, he travels through the deadly terrain with Tock and the Humbug. Together, they manage to outsmart some of the Demons and arrive at the Castle. As they try to escape down the slopes, the Demons follow in ravenous pursuit. Just as they are about to engulf the heroes, the creatures of darkness are driven back into the mountains by the combined force of Dictionopolis and Digitopolis.
